Transcending into the Magical – Light as Sound, Shadow, and Spiritual Resonance

Sargasso proudly announces the release of LICHT!, a compelling and deeply reflective new recording by cellist Christina Meißner, bringing into dialogue the visionary chants of Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179) and a newly commissioned tetralogy by contemporary composer John Palmer.

Following her acclaimed release ISPARIZ. eine Vision, Meißner continues her exploration of Hildegard’s sonic cosmos, opening new pathways between medieval spirituality and contemporary musical language. The result is an immersive listening experience that mirrors the intensity of live performance where time seems suspended, and sound becomes a space of encounter.

At the heart of this project lies a shared spiritual impulse that transcends centuries: a search for illumination, for inner and outer light, and for meaning beyond the immediacy of everyday life. Hildegard’s ecstatic, visionary melodies meet Palmer’s highly individual sonic world, forming a cycle of transformation in which light emerges as metaphor, material, and lived experience.

Meißner’s unique approach dissolves the traditional hierarchy between voice and instrument. In her arrangements of Hildegard’s chants, cello and voice become equal, interwoven presences: breath, resonance, and gesture unfolding in a shared sonic space. Subtle temporal displacements and a refined sensitivity to timbre create a living, organic musical texture where sound is continuously redefined.

Framing these reimaginings, John Palmer’s Lux VivensLux ArdensLux Obscura, and Lux Serena, written especially for Meißner, explore light as a condition of perception and transformation. Each work inhabits a distinct sonic and spiritual state inspired by Hildegard’s visions: from radiant emergence to burning intensity, from shadowed depth to fragile serenity. Drawing on extended cello techniques and a deeply collaborative creative process, Palmer’s music unfolds as a prism of light and resonance where sound is experienced both as physical presence and as metaphysical reflection.

The recording moves through cycles of illumination and obscurity, appearance and dissolution. Light here is not merely brightness, but a threshold inseparably bound to shadow, to uncertainty, and to the unknown.

In this interplay, LICHT! becomes not a depiction of light, but an invitation to experience its unfolding as vibration, as energy, and as a shared act of listening.
